FAQs
I see patients of all ages, including children, adolescents, and adults. For young children, I often work with both the child and their parents together using Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) or exposure therapy. I believe strongly in building parental confidence and knowledge and therefore include them in treatment as much as possible.
PCIT is an evidence-based treatment for young children with behavioral challenges, such as anxiety, ADHD, or oppositional behaviors. In PCIT, parents and children attend sessions together, and parents are coached in real-time to develop effective relationship-building and discipline skills. The goal is to strengthen the parent-child relationship, improve children’s behaviors, and reduce parenting stress.
The frequency of therapy depends on your symptoms, how long you’ve been struggling, and other factors unique to your situation. Most people benefit from weekly sessions at treatment outset, with less frequent visits once goals have been achieved. The length of therapy varies for each person. Many clients see significant improvement within a relatively short period, especially with a behavioral approach. We will regularly review your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
The first session is focused on getting to know you, understanding your concerns, and setting goals for therapy. We’ll discuss your history, what brought you in, and what you hope to achieve. For children, I’ll also meet with parents to gather important background information and explain the therapy process. For PCIT cases, I will teach the skills parents need to know for the first phase of treatment in the initial session as well.
